What is bark mulch?
Bark mulch is shredded or chunked bark from coniferous trees (mostly Douglas fir in the Pacific Northwest), applied as a top layer over soil. It suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, insulates roots from temperature swings, and breaks down slowly to add organic matter. In Kitsap landscapes, bark mulch is the most-ordered material for residential beds because it does the same work as decorative rock for a fraction of the cost, while feeding the soil as it decomposes. Bark sizes and what they're best for
- Fine bark: smooth uniform texture for flower beds, planters, and around small plants. The most visually polished option.
- Dark fine bark: same texture, deeper aged color for higher contrast against green foliage and lighter mulches.
- Medium bark (dark medium bark): classic textured ground cover for tree rings, shrub beds, and general landscape mulching. Lasts longer between refreshes than fine bark.
- Small nugget bark: chunkier pieces for slope coverage and areas where you want the mulch to stay put in wind or runoff.
- Hog fuel: coarse, irregular wood chips. Used for driveway mud control, trails, erosion barriers, and large-area ground cover. The most budget-friendly per yard.
- Shavings: lightweight, clean wood shavings for stalls, pens, and animal bedding.
How to choose the right bark mulch
For front beds and visible landscape areas, choose fine bark or dark fine bark for the most polished finish. For shrub beds, tree rings, and natural-area mulching, medium bark lasts longer and gives a more traditional textured look. For large-area ground cover, trails, and driveway mud control, hog fuel covers the most area per dollar. For slopes and high-runoff zones, small nugget bark stays in place better than fine textures. Our bark vs mulch guide walks through the decision in more depth.
How much bark do I need?
Bark is sold by the cubic yard. One yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, which is the recommended depth for weed suppression and moisture retention. A typical residential mulch refresh runs 2 to 4 yards depending on bed size. Apply bark in spring before weeds emerge, or in fall to insulate roots through winter. Use our landscape material calculator to work out yardage from your bed square footage.
Pairing bark with other materials
Working on multiple beds at once? Pair bark with compost for soil amendment under the mulch layer, or compare against decorative rock for areas where you want a longer-lasting non-organic finish.
