What is crushed rock?

Crushed rock is quarried stone mechanically broken to a target size, screened to remove out-of-spec pieces, and sold either with the fines ("minus") or with the fines screened out ("clean"). The angular surfaces of crushed rock interlock when compacted, which is why minus aggregates are the standard for driveways, walkways, and structural bases across the Pacific Northwest. Crushed rock differs from river rock, which is naturally rounded and used for decoration rather than structural compaction.

Minus vs clean: the most important decision

This is the choice that determines whether the rock works for your project, not the size. A minus aggregate (5/8" minus, 3/4" minus, 1 1/4" minus) contains fines that compact under pressure and bind the larger pieces into a firm, water-shedding surface. A clean rock (3/4" clean, 1 1/2" clean) has the fines screened out, leaving open voids between stones that water can move through. Use minus where you want a stable surface to drive or walk on. Use clean where you want water to drain away. Our 5/8" minus gravel guide goes deeper on the topic.

Common Kitsap County uses for crushed rock and gravel

  • Driveways and access roads: 4 to 6 inches of compacted minus aggregate over a stable subgrade. 5/8" minus is the most popular size; coarser 3/4" or 1 1/4" minus suits heavier traffic or steeper grades.
  • Paver bases and pathways: 1/4" minus compacts to a smooth, firm surface ideal for setting flagstone or pavers.
  • French drains and foundation perimeter: 3/4" clean or 1 1/2" clean lets water flow freely while keeping the trench stable.
  • Dry wells and infiltration trenches: clean drain rock surrounded by filter fabric handles roof and surface runoff.
  • Erosion control and rip-rap pads: larger angular aggregates stabilize slopes and channel edges.

How to choose the right crushed rock

If you need to drive on it or compact it, choose a minus aggregate. If water needs to move through it, choose a clean rock. For driveway base, 5/8" minus is the standard starting point. For drainage, 3/4" clean or 1 1/2" clean depending on volume. Read our best gravel for driveways in the Pacific Northwest and how to install a gravel driveway for installation specifics. Want recycled? Crushed asphalt compacts and self-locks over time and is popular for long driveways.

How much crushed rock do I need?

Gravel is priced by the cubic yard. One yard of compacted minus covers roughly 80 square feet at 4 inches deep, or 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Driveways typically need 4 to 6 inches of compacted base; French drains usually need 6 to 12 inches around the perforated pipe. Use our landscape material calculator to work out yardage from square footage.
