Sand and gravel: what's the difference?
"Sand" is fine angular or rounded particles smaller than about 1/8 inch, useful for paver bedding, masonry mixes, drainage layers, and play areas. "Gravel" covers anything from pea gravel (rounded, 3/8 inch) up through larger round drain rocks. Sand and gravel are often used together: a layer of compacted sand sets the bed, then gravel goes around or above it for drainage. Unlike crushed minus aggregates, the rounded stones in this collection don't lock up under compaction, which is exactly what you want for projects where water needs to keep moving.
Best uses for sand and gravel in Kitsap landscapes
- Paver and flagstone bedding: a 1 inch layer of washed sand over a compacted aggregate base gives pavers a smooth, flexible setting bed.
- French drains and yard drainage: rounded drain rock surrounded by filter fabric handles roof and surface runoff without clogging. The Kitsap winter rain makes this one of our highest-volume use cases.
- Pea gravel pathways and patios: smooth-walking surface for garden paths, dog runs, and informal patios. Excellent drainage means no puddles after rain.
- Playground and sandbox: clean washed sand for kid-safe play areas.
- Pit run for fill and grading: raw unscreened mixed-size gravel for budget-friendly bulk fill on driveways and access roads.
- Sand-and-gravel mixes: pre-blended for paver setting beds or concrete prep work.
How to choose the right sand or gravel
For paver and flagstone bedding, choose washed sand (the fines have been rinsed out so it doesn't clog drainage). For drainage trenches, French drains, or downspout zones, choose rounded drain rock (3/4 inch up through 1 1/2 inch depending on volume). For walking paths and dog runs, pea gravel is the classic choice. For raw bulk fill where appearance and grading don't matter, pit run is the budget-friendly option. Installing a French drain? Read our Pacific Northwest gravel guide and our crushed rock collection for the structural-aggregate side of the project.
How much sand or gravel do I need?
Sand and gravel are sold by the cubic yard. One yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. For paver bedding, plan on 1 inch of sand (roughly 300 square feet per yard). For French drains, plan 6 to 12 inches of drain rock around the perforated pipe. Use our landscape material calculator for project-specific quantities.
