Calculating How Much You Need
How do I know how many cubic yards to order?
Use our free landscape material calculator to get an exact estimate based on your project area and desired depth. As a general rule:
- 1 cubic yard covers approximately 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep
- 1 cubic yard covers approximately 150 sq ft at 2 inches deep
- 1 cubic yard covers approximately 300 sq ft at 1 inch deep
When in doubt, order a little extra — leftover material is always easier to deal with than running short mid-project.
How much topsoil do I need for a garden bed?
For a new garden bed, aim for 6–12 inches of quality soil. For a 100 sq ft bed at 6 inches deep, you'll need approximately 2 cubic yards. Use our calculator for your specific dimensions.
How much mulch do I need?
The standard mulch depth for garden beds is 2–3 inches. At 3 inches deep, 1 cubic yard covers approximately 100 sq ft. For paths and playgrounds, 4–6 inches is recommended. Use our calculator for exact quantities.
What's a cubic yard?
One cubic yard is 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet — about the size of a standard kitchen appliance. It weighs between 1,000 and 2,700 lbs depending on the material (topsoil and rock are heavier; bark and compost are lighter).
Materials & Products
What's the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?
Topsoil is the nutrient-rich upper layer of soil — it contains organic matter and supports plant growth. Use topsoil for garden beds, raised beds, and lawn repair.
Fill dirt is subsoil — it lacks organic matter but is structurally stable. Use fill dirt to level low spots, fill holes, or build up grade before laying topsoil on top.
For most planting projects, topsoil is what you want. For grading and drainage, fill dirt comes first, then topsoil on top.
What is 3-way mix?
Our 3-Way Topsoil Mix is a blend of topsoil, compost, and sand — a versatile all-purpose growing medium suitable for lawns, garden beds, raised beds, and general landscaping. The balanced blend provides good drainage while retaining nutrients.
What type of bark mulch should I use?
It depends on the application:
- Fine Bark — Great for garden beds and around delicate plants. Breaks down faster, adding organic matter to soil.
- Medium Bark — All-purpose choice for most landscaping. Good coverage and longevity.
- Dark Fine Bark — Premium appearance for high-visibility areas. Rich dark color.
- Hog Fuel — Coarse bark/wood chips, great for pathways, high-traffic areas, and weed suppression.
What types of compost do you carry?
We carry several compost options:
- Fish Compost — Nutrient-rich, ideal for vegetable gardens
- Mushroom Compost — Excellent for general soil amendment and flower beds
- Tagro — Premium biosolid-based compost, great for lawns and gardens
- View all composts
What gravel and rock products do you carry?
Harbor Soils carries a wide range of crushed rock, decorative rock, and hardscape materials:
- Crushed Rocks — ¾" clean, ¾" minus, 1¼" clean, 1¼" minus aggregate, crushed asphalt
- Decorative Rocks — River rock, landscape stone, and accent materials
- Rockery Rocks — Large boulders and rockery stone for walls and landscaping
- Sand & Gravel — Concrete sand, paver sand, drainage gravel
Do you carry materials for hardscaping projects?
Yes — our Hardscape collection includes materials for patios, pathways, driveways, and retaining walls.
What is Tagro?
Tagro is a premium composted product made from biosolids processed by the City of Tacoma. It's EPA-certified and widely used as a soil amendment for lawns and gardens throughout the Pacific Northwest. Tagro improves soil structure, adds nutrients, and supports healthy plant growth.
