Harbor Soils supplies rockery rocks, retaining-wall stone, and landscape boulders throughout Kitsap County, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Bremerton, and the Olympic Peninsula. Our quarry stone comes from Columbia, Washington, and Mt. St. Helens sources. Delivered to your project site or picked up at our Gig Harbor yard at 11612 WA-302.

What are rockery rocks?

"Rockery" describes both the stone and the structure: large quarry-cut or naturally weathered rocks stacked to form retaining walls, garden borders, slope stabilization, or decorative landscape features. Rockery walls are extremely popular across the Kitsap Peninsula because they handle the region's wet winters and slope-heavy terrain without needing the engineering, drainage, and permitting often required for poured concrete or block walls under four feet tall. The sizing convention ("1-man", "2-man", "3-man") refers historically to how many people were needed to position a stone, though in practice modern projects use machinery for anything 2-man and above.

Best uses for rockery rocks in Kitsap landscapes

  • Retaining walls under 4 feet: most Kitsap rockery walls are short enough to fall under residential exemptions, no engineering required. Confirm with your local jurisdiction.
  • Slope stabilization and terracing: rockery turns unusable slopes into terraced garden beds, especially common on Bainbridge Island, Bremerton hillsides, and the Hood Canal bluffs.
  • Garden borders and raised planter walls: 1-man rockery (50 to 200 lbs each) is the most popular size for borders. Stones can be moved without machinery.
  • Decorative landscape boulders: a single 3-man or larger boulder placed as a focal point anchors a planting bed or yard feature.
  • Erosion control along driveways and culverts: larger rockery and quarry spalls stabilize roadside runoff channels.

How to choose the right rockery size

For garden borders, low planter walls, and decorative placements, 1-man rockery is the most popular choice. Each stone weighs roughly 50 to 200 pounds and can be positioned by one or two people without machinery. For mid-height retaining walls (2 to 4 feet) or larger features, step up to 2-man rockery. For tall walls or major focal boulders, choose 3-man rockery and plan for excavator placement. Granite reads cleaner in formal landscapes; Mt. St. Helens volcanic rock adds color variation (gray, red, and black tones) for naturalistic settings. Read our full rockery rock guide for wall construction tips and material comparisons.

How much rockery rock do I need?

Rockery is sold by the cubic yard. For estimating, plan on roughly one ton per yard depending on the source and size. For retaining walls, calculate the volume by length × height × average depth, then add 10-15% for stacking gaps. Our team is happy to help size a project; call 253-857-5125 with your dimensions.

Building a retaining wall or feature?

Pair rockery with crushed drain rock behind the wall face for drainage, plus decorative accent stone for finishing around the base. All three deliver together.
