Harbor Soils supplies pavers, stepping stones, retaining wall blocks, edgestones, and hardscape materials throughout Kitsap County, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Bremerton, and the Olympic Peninsula. From a single 16-inch stepping stone to full RomanStack retaining wall systems, we stock and deliver direct from our yard at 11612 WA-302.

What is hardscape?

"Hardscape" describes the non-living, structural elements of a landscape: pavers, walls, walkways, steps, edging, and patios. While the "softscape" (lawns, plants, beds) takes years to mature and shifts with the seasons, hardscape is the permanent structure that defines how a yard is used. Quality hardscape materials are dimensionally consistent (so they install square and level), weather-resistant (so they hold up to Pacific Northwest freeze-thaw cycles and persistent rain), and color-stable.

Hardscape categories we stock

  • Stepping stones: 12-inch and 16-inch round and square stepping stones, exposed-aggregate and smooth finishes, for garden paths and informal walkways.
  • Pavers: cobblestone, basketweave, and cottage-stone styles for patios, driveways, and pool decks.
  • Retaining wall blocks: the RomanStack system (4"x8", 8"x8" jumbo, caps, cascade units, fire pits) for stacked retaining walls and feature structures. Built for tumbled, natural-looking stone walls without poured concrete.
  • Edgestones and edgers: 8-inch edgestones (gray and exposed-aggregate) and scalloped edgers for crisp bed borders.
  • Manor Stone series: rounded and flat-face wall blocks plus matching steps for low retaining walls and outdoor staircases.
  • Roman stone series: cobblestone and cypress finishes for traditional walkway and patio installations.

How to choose hardscape materials

For walkways and garden paths, stepping stones (12 or 16 inch) or pavers in a natural color set the pace and define foot traffic. For patios and outdoor entertaining spaces, full paver systems (cobblestone, basketweave) give the most polished finish. For low retaining walls under 4 feet, the RomanStack 4"x8" system stacks fast and looks tumbled and natural. For structural retaining walls, RomanStack jumbo with caps and cascade units handles taller features. Pair hardscape with crushed rock for paver base and a layer of washed sand for the setting bed. How much hardscape material do I need?

Pavers and stepping stones are sold by the piece. Calculate your project area in square feet, then divide by the coverage of one piece. Most full-size pavers cover 0.5 to 1 square foot each, so a 100-square-foot patio typically takes 100 to 200 pieces depending on style. Retaining wall blocks are calculated by wall face area: length × height divided by block face size. Our team is happy to walk through specifics; call 253-857-5125 with dimensions and we can estimate quantity.

Building the complete patio or wall system?

Pair hardscape materials with crushed-rock base below the surface, washed sand for the bedding layer, and rockery for integrated retaining-wall features. Everything coordinates on one delivery.
