How much 3-Way Topsoil do I need?
One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 81 square feet at 4 inches, or 54 square feet at 6 inches. If you want to check the math yourself: length in feet times width in feet times depth in inches, divided by 324, gives you cubic yards.
Depth is where most orders go wrong, so match it to the job:
- Topdressing an established lawn: 1/4 to 1/2 inch. A 1,000 square foot lawn needs well under a yard.
- New lawn or turf: 4 inches minimum, 6 inches ideal. Grass roots only reach 4 to 6 inches, so deeper is wasted money.
- In-ground vegetable beds: 8 inches minimum, 10 to 12 inches ideal, since carrots, beets and tomatoes need room for roots.
- Raised beds: the full depth of the bed. A 4 by 8 foot bed at 12 inches deep takes just over a yard.
The most common mistake we see is ordering renovation depth for a topdressing job. Someone reads that lawns want a few inches of topsoil, orders six yards for a lawn that needed one, and ends up with a pile in the driveway and grass smothered underneath. When in doubt, call us with your square footage before you order.
3-Way Topsoil compared to our other soils
3-Way is the middle option and the right default for most projects. Fill Dirt at $12.99 per yard is structural material for raising grade and filling low spots, not for growing in. Garden Mix at $61.99 per yard is richer and ready to plant straight out of the truck, which suits a vegetable bed better than a lawn. Mushroom Compost at $74.99 per yard is an amendment to work into soil you already have rather than a soil in its own right. The full range is in bulk soils.
