What is topsoil, exactly?
"Topsoil" is the top layer of soil, usually screened to remove debris and root material before sale. In the Pacific Northwest, most "topsoil" sold by the yard is actually a blend, not raw native soil. Our 3-Way Mix, for example, combines screened topsoil, composted organics, and sand to produce a balanced growing medium that drains better than native clay and holds nutrients better than pure sand. Pure screened topsoil works for fill and rough grading, but for anything you plan to plant in, a blended mix performs better. For more on what makes a quality topsoil, see our guide to loam soil.
Best uses for bulk topsoil and garden soil in Kitsap County
Most Kitsap homes sit on glacial till, Alderwood gravelly sandy loam, or Kitsap silt loam, all of which benefit from amending or replacing with screened topsoil. Common projects we deliver for:
- New lawn installation: 3 to 6 inches of screened 3-Way Mix over compacted subgrade, then seed or sod.
- Raised garden beds: a richer Garden Mix or 5-Way blend with extra compost holds moisture and feeds vegetable roots through the season.
- Re-grading around the foundation: screened fill dirt for the bulk fill, with a few inches of topsoil on top if you are planting.
- Topdressing existing turf: a thin layer of Lawn & Flower Mix breaks down quickly and feeds compacted lawns.
- Tree and shrub planting: backfill with a 50/50 blend of native soil and Garden Mix for best establishment.
How to choose the right soil for your project
If you need volume and don't care about fertility, choose screened fill dirt. If you need a balanced growing medium for lawns or general landscaping, choose a 3-Way Mix. If you are filling raised beds or vegetable gardens where roots need to thrive, choose a richer Garden Mix or 5-Way Mix with added compost. How much topsoil do I need?
Soil is sold by the cubic yard. A standard pickup truck holds about one yard. One yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, 80 square feet at 4 inches, or 50 square feet at 6 inches. Our landscape material calculator works out the exact quantity for your project once you know your square footage and target depth.
Building a complete bed?
Pair topsoil with compost to amend heavier clay soils, and bark mulch as a top layer once your plants are in. All three deliver together on the same order.
